Coffee Spots in Melbourne

Whenever you think of Melbourne, you will naturally think of coffee. The Coffee-centric city has pride itself on serving up one of the best cups of coffee in the World. It is no wonder that all your coffee fanatic friends have flocked to this artsy-fartsy city to live their mornings on perfected doses of caffeine. I am a coffee-lover at heart. In terms of sieving out flavours, notes and bodies of Western coffee, I still have much to learn. But on any given day, a good cup of coffee will easily make my day.

I spent two whole weeks in the city in a desperate attempt to visit as many cafes as possible and drink as many cups of coffee as possible. But the truth is, ONE CAN ONLY DRINK SO MUCH COFFEE IN A DAY! It was such a cold hard slap of realisation that I was literally exclaiming it out aloud on my snapchat in the middle of an alleyway after stepping out of a cafe. Perhaps the people behind me must have thought I was out of my mind. Or perhaps, I was just high on caffeine. Who knows?

In this post, I'm gonna share with you some of the coffee spots in Melbourne:-

PROUD MARY

Some people like to leave the best for the last; I like to start with the best. Undoubtedly one of my favourite cups of coffee in Melbourne, Proud Mary did not disappoint in terms of coffee. I especially love their Honeysuckle house blend. It was very smooth, hit the right notes of acidity and had a nice caramel finish - mimicking that of honey. It was AH-MAZING! A barista friend of mine told me to bring home a bag of beans that I thought was the best. I made a trip to Proud Mary on my last day just to get this.

MARKET LANE

Another one of my favs has gotta be the coffee from Market Lane. They have several outlets strewn all over the city, making it extremely accessible for people who enjoy their coffee. Since I was bunking at my cousin's place near Queen Victoria Market, inevitably, the ones that are closest to me are at QVM and it was so close, I threw on a huge coat and did a coffee run in my flip-flops! What's awesome about them is that they also sell a whole load of coffee accessories to cater to the budding home baristas at home.

PATRICIA COFFEE BREWERS

Tucked away in the corner of Little Bourke Street lies this coffee shop that serves up artisanal coffee. It is standing-room-only but you can easily spot it by its distinct milk crates in bright orange lined outside. You could even sneak a peak into the lovely space through the windows along the road. If you're thinking of bringing home a tin of single origin coffee, you will be thrilled to know that their packaging is BOMB DIGGITY. Comes in this cobalt blue tin that you know will create a statement sat on your counter top.

SEVEN SEEDS

So before my trip to Melbourne, I drew up a checklist of cafes I wanted to visit for sure and Seven Seeds was one of them. I know I know, how could I possibly take this long to FINALLY visit Melb right? I have a friend who used to stay near the cafe and she would come by here every day before school. I love the open concept of the cafe and there is great light pouring through its space. They even have an area for take-away drinkers to read papers / magazines whilst waiting and it had a perfect view of the baristas at work. Score!

PADRE

To be honest, I've never heard of Padre Coffee until I made a trip to South Melbourne Market and chanced upon it. Then, I found out that they are also available at QVM. What struck me the most about Padre was how enthusiastic the people there are about their coffee. It's always quite boisterous and loud at the SMM's outlet but would serve as a good pick-me-up if you're intending to make a round at the market early in the morning.

ASSEMBLY

I would like to say that, Assembly coffee ranks quite high up in my list as well. First up, I love how quaint and cosy this place is. There are seats inside and benches outside and features a hole-in-the-wall window, allowing you to sneak a peak at the barista preparing your coffee. They are also very passionate about their teas and have a tea bar set up inside the cafe. Everything is so clean and chic! I definitely walked away from Assembly with one too many tins of coffee and teas. Definitely make a trip down if you're ever in Melbourne.

AUNTIE PEG'S

With Proud Mary as their sister cafe, Auntie Peg's is just a street down and acts as a roaster houses an extensive brew bar. You will love this space if you are a coffee fanatic cos it will probably have every imaginable coffee equipment you can think of ever owning. The first thing that made me ooh-ed and ahh-ed were the extremely high ceilings and extensive space that sits its roaster. The purpose of Aunty Peg's is also to educate people about coffee - doesn't matter if you are extremely knowledgable or have zero knowledge at all. This is also the place to go if you are a DIE HARD Proud Mary fan and would like a t-shirt or tote bag imprinted with their logo. Don't say I didn't tell you!

 AXIL

Axil is also another one of those names that is not unfamiliar if you are fond of coffee. They supposedly churn out one of the best coffees in town and I've personally had some cups from them at home that were pretty good. Coffee was a letdown for me at their shop along Flinders Lane. Perhaps the water temperature was too high and it killed the flavour. Nevertheless, it could be a one-off thing and I'm sure others have had better experiences than me when it came to their coffee. The baristas are really friendly though and sometimes, it's also the people that serve you that makes the coffee, don't you think?
